What chronological age is, and what it is not
Chronological age is the least interesting number in an assessment and the one everything else depends on. It is the plain calendar distance between a date of birth and a chosen date, expressed in completed years, months and days. It carries no judgement: it does not say whether a child is ahead or behind, only how long they have been alive.
That matters because almost every other age in clinical and educational work is defined against it. Bone age is read from a hand and wrist radiograph and compared with chronological age to ask whether the skeleton is maturing early or late. Developmental age describes the level at which someone is performing, and is only meaningful as a comparison with the chronological age of children performing at that level. Get the chronological age wrong by a month and every comparison drawn from it inherits the error.
Why the months are written with a semicolon
Psychology, audiology and speech-language pathology write ages as years;months — 6;4 for six years and four months. The semicolon exists because a decimal is ambiguous. Written as 6.4, a reader cannot tell whether that means four months or four tenths of a year, and four tenths of a year is nearly five months. On a test where norms change every three months, that difference moves a score.
The second convention is that months are completed, never rounded. A child who is 6 years, 4 months and 29 days is 6;4. Rounding to 6;5 places them in an older norm band, where more is expected of them, and quietly lowers their standard score. Where a test manual states its own rule, the manual wins — some explicitly instruct rounding at 16 days — but completed months is the default assumption.
Working it out on paper, and where it goes wrong
The manual method writes the test date above the date of birth in day, month, year columns and subtracts right to left, borrowing where a column goes negative:

The borrowing is where hand calculation fails. Days are borrowed from the month before the test month — here August, so 31 days, not a generic 30. Choose the wrong month, or assume every month has 30 days, and the answer drifts by a day or two, which is usually harmless and occasionally decisive at a cut-off.
Corrected age for infants born preterm
For a baby born before term, developmental expectations are normally judged against corrected age: the chronological age minus the number of weeks born early. An infant born ten weeks early, six months old by the calendar, has a corrected age of around three and a half months, and it would be wrong to expect six-month milestones of them. The correction is generally applied for the first two years.
This calculator produces chronological age. Subtract the prematurity yourself, and write down which age a record refers to — an uncorrected age noted as though it were corrected is a genuinely misleading entry in a file.
Where an exact age changes an outcome
- Standardised testing. Norm tables step by three-month or six-month bands. A child near a boundary lands in a different band depending on how carefully the age was worked out.
- School entry and year placement, assessed at a fixed cut-off date rather than on the first day of term.
- Growth charts, where a plotted point is only as accurate as the age on its horizontal axis.
- Eligibility thresholds in sport, benefits and insurance, which are defined to the day.
